New Exterior Painting of a Beautiful Ukiah Cottage

mendocino house painting before. This beautiful century old home posed an interesting painting challenge because the house had originally been whitewashed, and the aging whitewash surface would not hold new paint. Later paint jobs kept peeling off the whitewash in large chunks, and the whitewash itself was very chalky with age.

Tom and Laurel begin repair work on the exterior siding.

To handle this challenge, Tom and Laurel first scraped and sanded the exterior to prepare the house for painting. In some areas the surface had to be scraped down to the bare wood. Tom and Laurel then made carpentry repairs to the trim, dormers, and siding. All the replacement pieces were custom made to match the original 100-year-old carpentry of the house.

Next, the entire house received a base coat of oil-based primer, and then additional coats were applied to problem areas as needed. After that the house was covered with two coats of paint and new trim colors.

The spectacular results of a careful painting restoration make this period gem shine like new.
